A recent collaboration between Beckers Group UK and Labman Automation is set to highlight how advanced automation can address long-standing challenges in coatings quality control. Full details to be revealed soon.

Operating at the forefront of coil coatings manufacturing, Beckers identified critical limitations within its fineness of grind testing processes at both production (grind) and quality control stages. Variability in Hegman gauge readings, driven largely by subjective visual interpretation, led to inconsistencies between departments. This lack of repeatability introduced downstream quality risks, including batch rejections, reprocessing requirements, and disruption to tightly scheduled milling operations.

Seeking a more robust and data-driven approach, Beckers engaged Labman to explore automated solutions capable of delivering consistent, objective measurement. Drawing on prior industry experience and familiarity with Labman’s technology, the team initiated the implementation of TIDAS, the automated Hegman gauge analyser designed to eliminate operator-dependent variability.

The project brought together key stakeholders including Peter Gateley, Quality Manager, and Jamie Parsonage, Business Process Improvement Specialist, who worked closely with Labman’s engineering team throughout the evaluation and procurement process.
